Breastfeeding is truly the hardest thing I’ve had to tackle postpartum. I quickly learned that I wasn’t alone in this feat. Although breastfeeding is natural, it’s not intuitive and that can be a hard concept to absorb when you just gave birth and are at the start of your fourth trimester.

I battled latch issues with my son for 8 weeks and had to to turn to exclusive pumping in order to continue to breastfeed. I am now 11 months postpartum and am getting ready to wean and wanted to commemorate my journey with a piece of breastmilk jewelry.

There are some really wonderful small businesses out there that offer this service but going from two incomes to one so I could be home to raise my son, I am on a budget and love that the Motherlove Lackto DIY Breastmilk Jewelry Kit was the perfect fit!

This kit comes with:

  • Mix A (organic compound)

  • Mix B (organic compound)

  • Pendant mold with post for hole for pendant

  • Clasp

  • Gloves

  • Dropper

  • Mixer

They have so many pendant styles to choose from too! I personally opted for the Mini Drop charm as it has such a classic look to it and would fit my wardrobe and style best.

The instructions are very thorough and come with a QR code so you can also watch an informational video on how to create your piece. I did have to do a glove change about halfway through but that was only because the gloves were too big for me!

I got this entire process completed over 2 nap times as you have to let the pendant harden for at least 48 hours before you remove it from the mold.

Here are some things to keep in mind when using this DIY kit:

  • The kit’s do not come with a chain -  you can either use one you already have (like I did) or purchase one directly from Lackto

  • You will complete this in 2 parts - the first will be to create the pendant and then you will need to let it harden for 48 hours and then will attach the pendant clasp once hardened

  • You will need to ensure that you have a good 20-30 minutes, uninterrupted, to do the first part of creating the pendant as the mixing process is time sensitive

  • Since this is a “living” piece of jewelry created from a chemical process and has organic matter in its composition, it’s important to follow the care and storage instructions

  • This is best stored in an open area - jewelry boxes are too stuffy!

  • You will need to take this off to shower or swim

  • It’s important that it does not come in contact with other chemicals like perfumes, lotions, or sunscreens

After 3 weeks, my necklace is still is great shape and I get so many compliments on it and love that it's a subtle statement piece for me! I would absolutely buy this again for myself and can't wait to gift these kits to my mama friends!
